Custom Designing Company Logos For Construction Firms

The construction sector is getting very competitive. Bigger companies handle the major development jobs while smaller and newer companies must make evident their quality with numerous subcontracts before moving on to larger ones.

My design company has just been tabled an assignment to produce a new construction logo design for a local construction company. To begin the project, the art director and I paid a visit to our client’s office for a brief interview session to gather more information about the company.

Like many other clients we have interviewed, most companies realize they need a new look to help them compete but are not exactly sure what they want. That is where we come into play.

Before embarking on the logo design, we ordinarily inquire about the history of the organization, its turnover, its objectives, its specialty, its target market and the reason it wants a new construction logo design; just to get a better perception of things.

We discovered that they are a relatively young firm, 10 years in the business with 4 major subcontract projects and many minor ones under their belts, each one bigger than the last. They are now preparing to adopt a blue ocean strategy and venture into eco-friendly medium cost suburban development - a niche with very few competitors - and thus taking the opportunity to create a reputation for themselves as one of the earliest companies to engage this niche.

From the interview, we found out that they have the required resources to engage medium scale development projects. Their identified niche also makes it easier to distinguish them from other developers.

At our office, we had a little brainstorming session and charted our art direction. After that we assigned 4 designers to produce individual interpretations or logo samples to turn those ideas to logos.

After a number of days, the initial designs were ready for show. Some designs employed the use of stylized text while others utilized construction related graphics like hardhats and tool pouches to get the point across. Although all 4 construction logo design samples were unique in their own way, they all stuck to 2 major points.

Professionalism
Developers deal with costly projects. To qualify for such projects, they must always be perceived as a professional and responsible organization with excellent business ethics. Hence, the tidy and clear designs reflected that appropriately.

Eco-Friendliness
This is the niche this firm is determined to penetrate. Obviously, the designs, either by color or graphics, further impresses the company’s commitment to the preservation of the environment.

Alas it is up to our clients to make a decision on the designs. Alternatively they can certainly make minor alterations but as professional designers, we must ensure the design eventually keeps to the key points stated earlier.
